I don't blame you at all for pride in your son's defense of himself. I would go just as you describe, right up until the joke about Rocky. Don't give him that nickname, nor glorify fighting, nor express pride in the shiner he dished out. Keep that to yourself. He'll definitely come out a better kid if you go over the alternative choices he could have made and discuss them with him. Make it clear that he does not have to let people walk all over him, but sometimes it is better to just walk away, and resolving the conflict by working it out without fighting might be the best way most of the time. I don't claim to be the world's greatest father, so you can take what I say or leave it.
