Former U.S. Attorney Faces Four Decades In Prison After Pleading Guilty

Matthew Borghese - All Headline News Staff Writer Raleigh, NC (AHN) - Sam Currin has pleased guilty to charges of tax fraud and conspiracy.
Currin, 57, a former U.S. attorney, judge and state Republican chairman faces up to 43 years in prison for laundering over $1 million through his law firm, as well as failing to report an offshore account in his tax filing.
According to MSNBC, Currin also pleaded guilty in a related case to obstructing a grand jury investigation into securities fraud by conspiring to withhold documents and provide false testimony.
WRAL, in North Carolina, where Currin was a U.S. attorney for the Eastern District in the 1980's, says a group that included one of Currin's legal clients engaged in a scheme to manipulate the stock prices of several publicly traded companies through the use of spam e-mail, mass unsolicited faxes, Internet search optimization and voice mail broadcasting, prosecutors said. The scheme garnered millions, and prosecutors said Currin received more than $240,000 for his involvement. |
