ManyMoose -

May I remind you that right now the Israelis are no longer bombing Lebanon as they were just a short while ago, and Hezbollah is not shelling Israeli villages, because of the efforts of the U.N. and some of its member nations.

Admittedly, international cooperation is difficult. All the more so because of all the bullying the Bush Administration has done to both allies and enemies alike.

For that reason, a new Administration might have better luck effectuating an international solution than Bush could have right now. He's painted himself into a corner, rhetorically.

I know that one thing I would do if it were actually my job to solve the Iraq mess would be to get a bunch of smart people into a room - none of whom were Donald Rumsfeld or Dick Cheney or Paul Wolfowitz, (but some of whom might well be Republicans) and start trying to figure it out.

In one way, I hope the Democrats don't win in 2008. If they do, they'll have almost no choice but to raise taxes, since these budget deficits are both unsustainable and irresponsible. So of course, the Republicans would hold that over their heads for years. And they might not be able to do any better to fix the Iraqmire than Bush has. It's a very screwed up situation, as we can all agree, and doesn't lend itself to satisfying solutions.

It would be better for the Democrats to let the Republicans take the heat for their own failures, then start doing what they can in 2012. By then Barack Obama might be ready to go.
