Yes, they are almost the same size. My Samsung Yepp YP-F1 is over a year old, and is almost exactly the same size as the shuffle. The Yepp is barely larger than the clip on its back.
There are a ton of Yepp models, some huge, and some tiny. I think you just don't know what's out there.

Plus, it has a 4 line screen, and an FM tuner, and it can record the radio or through its tiny microphone.

The only reason people are gushing over the shuffle is quite frankly, the vast majority of consumers are literally unaware that any other mp3 players exist. Apple's carpetbomb advertising has succeeded to such an extent that if you asked 100 people to name an MP3 player other than the ipod, you'd be lucky to find 1 person who could name another.

And it is nowhere near the same size, when you are looking for something to clip-on while running, for example.
