Jerry - I sense a Challenge

First off that's the kind of reply I enjoy and respect - Excellent - now we can have a constructive dialog and no doubt I will learn something and I hope you too can come away feeling the exchange has been productive.

Ok - So what we need to do is build a bid for a 25 user network with all of the capabilities of Small Business Backoffice vs. Intranetware for Small Business. You represent Novell and I represent MS. Now this will help everyone understand the impact of the product and it will help Novell if they read this understand how they might effectively combat it in the marketplace as you are a reseller and you will do you best to match features and price - Here is your chance to once and for all beat MS - and show Novell how it is done.

Will you take the challenge? If you do we let the thread judge our entries. They will be the customer and they will choose a proposal. Forget the fact that we are Novell biased here and lets see what transpires. For step one don't worry about matching the single vendor support costs you get with MS - we can add a phase if we are still competitive after we config a basic network. OK?

We will submit bids for 10 users.

"According to IDC/Link, 74.6 percent of small businesses currently have one PC or more and 29.9 percent are networked. This networking number is expected to rise to 40.9 percent by the year 2001, dramatically increasing the need for computer professionals focused on setting up networking systems for small business customers."

Fair enough? Both Novell and MS want the business and this is where the profit is going forward as saturation has hit the higher end.

So - Return a reply with any ground rules you think need to be detailed so I don't spend my Sunday working all this up for nothing.

Seriously - this is an excellent excercise for investors to experience. This product and market segment define Novell - This is where they make the majority of the sales - smaller shops. If they lose it to MS it will be over IMHO.

What do you say are we on? Now I don't do bids for a living so go easy on me as this is alot of work for me. I promise to be fair and use prices that you can validate on Web resources such as http:www.pcmall.com or cdw.com. or microsoft. I will use the street price for the full BackOffice even though the SB issue will be much lower. I got a feeling it will not matter in the end.

Can we agree for the purposes of this exercise we need to bid the following:

1.Network Operating System (NOS), which provides application, file and print services.
2.Web Server and Publishing service including the ability to search web sites for specific files.
3.Email with integrated groupware and scheduling capability.
4.Full featured enterprise relational SQL database.
5.Proxy Server for faster access to intranet web services as well as secure Internet access.
6.Web site management tools
7.Web authoring tools.
8.Front end Browser.
9.Fax Server
10. Dial Up networking Support
11. Modem Sharing Service
12. License for client access to the server functions as required by the vendor.

Ready when you are - Hey I might be dead wrong on this I have no idea what you will spec.

Jim
Are we on?

Jim
