It was a sham trial from beginning to end. What I see going on Iraq can be summarized pretty succinctly. It has all the earmarks of a free and Democratic society, but none of the infrastructure or cutlural mentality to sustain it. In other words, they have elections, they have a judiciary, they have an army, they have a parliament and a PM, but they don't have a culture geared to consensus. They don't have restraint on corruption. They don't have the ability to resolve arguments without resorting to factional violence. They don't have the willpower to stand up to tyrants. They don't have the desire to die for their freedom and the right to elect their own officials. They don't have a thriving middle class.

Can the US give those things to the Iraqi people? The answer is a resounding NO! We could give them a start by overthrowing Saddam and by training their army to be professional and by giving them enough breathing room to write a constitution and have elections. Beyond that, which we've already accomplished, there is nothing more we can do.

Why are we still there? They are on a course now, over which we will have no impact, no matter how long we stay. It's all a collossal waste of American lives, money, prestige, and the return on investment to the US is zero.
