"9/11 is no abstraction to me. So please don't take such an imperious tone with me about "the real world"."

The context of my comment to you was relating to your apparent leaning towards appeasement. I am sorry you found my tone "imperious". I did not intend to imply you don't occupy the real world. Obviously, I think that running from these savage brutes is a dereliction of duty and an insult to every single life lost both on 9/11 and since then in the various theatres of operation.

I have also criticised you for being critical of plans put forward while offering nothing to deal with the problem. So, I think it only fair that I offer my own rough solution to the current quagmire.

Firstly, the problems in the Middle East and worldwide will continue to exacerbate. It is necessary to American interests to have two major military bases in Iraq. For that purpose we require to stay the course and maintain an alliance with the Iraqi Government--codified in a mutual defense pact or treaty.

It goes without saying that a military presence is required for future developments in defending against primitive nations working to develop and use weapons of destruction. Israel is too small to go it alone in perpetuity.

I would create state of the art modern facilities for a permanent military presence in this strategic region. I would run Two training camps from near these bases to assist the Iraqi government in their struggle with warring factions and criminal elements. The Americans would then confine themselves to air support and logistical assistance. They would no longer engage fanatics in ground fighting where they are forced to live by rules while the cowards may live as unprincipled as they wish. NO MORE.

The same in Afghanistan. A permanent military base and training camp authorized by formal treaty with the Government. If a poppy field comes up destroy it from the air.

If the UN wish to place fighters on the ground in these sectarian struggles--FINE. Americans have shouldered the burden of too many young lives lost in trying to make the world a safer and better place. It is time for the troops to go home while the military presence and the mission remains.

Also, I would continue to work on developing advanced drones so that pilots would not need to take on overly risky missions of air support.

This would allow us to STAY THE COURSE and maintain every iota of dignity--while yet bringing the boys out of the high risk zones and letting many of them return to other military duties.

And if the Republicans were smart, they would take this message to the public...NOW <g>

The trash talk in the U.S. is despicable. You don't run down the intelligence of your service men and woman and you don't disparage their contribution, mission, or sacrifice. I would bring most of the ground troops home once the military bases are fully equipped and manned and I would do it to a week of feting and celebrations for the entire world to see. When kids volunteer to join the military, they should be able to envision future honor and respect--not contempt.

So there is my solution: Leave--but don't leave.
