I suppose in light of that article that my proposal seems somewhat unfeeling. I realize the soldiers are willing to tough it out as long as it takes--and they see how vulnerable the people are to the savagery all around. But if civil war is to happen in spite of efforts, then I think we need to give air support and other means while preserving the lives of our own soldiers (as you know, I am Canadian, but I have always considered our countries as a unified bastion of civilization. Your United States are simply additional Canadian provinces! ;-)).

Regardless of how much ground fighting is done, I think it is essential that two very potent military bases be established in perpetuity under Treaty with our Iraqi allies. Let some countries carp--just get it done. We cannot pretend that Iran and the others will not exercise their powers to the limits they possess. They will get away with whatever force will allow them to accomplish. Only force will contain them.

I understand the soldiers wish to get the job done right (as in supporting a functional democracy). I have heard them on talk shows saying it might take towards ten years and the willingness is there. All I am saying is there is a political alternative to withdrawal if the political climate forces officials to insult the dignity of these soldiers. We MUST remain in Iraq. No ifs, ands, or buts.

And I'm sure that the Iraqi Government can supply the gas for the military base protection. That would only be right...
