I agree that a precipitous pullout of the troops would leave Iraq in chaos. I think this solder said it best:

"Pulling out now would be as bad or worse than going forward with no changes," Modlin said. "Sectarian violence would be rampant, democracy would cease to exist, and the rule of law would be decimated. It's not 'stay the course,' and it's not 'cut and run' or other political catchphrases. There are people's lives here. There are so many different dynamics that go on here that a simple solution just isn't possible."

The Bush Administration, while campaigning, likes to always cast the issues as completely black and white. They say Republicans want to to win the war, whle the Democrats want to cut and run.

I don''t hear that from the Democrats, and some Republicans, who are calling for an exit strategy. The call is for a change in policy that will eventually get us out of there. Establishing a timetable is one of the suggestions. Obviously any timetable would have to include clear goals, things that would have to be accomplished before our troops pull out. A timetable would have to be flexible, because if you don't accomplish the things that are required in one phase, you have to delay the start of the next.

Dole said the Democrats would be content to lose the war in Iraq. That's just wrong. The Democrats just want to abandon what is clearly a losing strategy in favor of a new one.
