SAN FRANCISCO -- Intel Corp. and Micron Technology Inc. announced plans to expand their alliance with a new chip factory in Singapore.
The precise size of the potential investment has not been determined. But an Intel spokesman said plants of this size typically cost about $3 billion.
Intel and Micron last January formed an alliance, called IM Flash Technologies, to make NAND flash, a variety of memory chip that is widely used to store data in digital cameras, portable music players and other gadgets. Their new joint venture in Singapore is expected to begin production in the second half of 2008.
The companies now make NAND chips in Boise, Ida. and Manassas, Va., with a factory in Lehi, Utah, slated to start production in 2007.
