Allen, I think the Iraq issue IS black and white.

The Bush Administration, while campaigning, likes to always cast the issues as completely black and white. They say Republicans want to to win the war, whle the Democrats want to cut and run.

I believe that characterization is true. To the extent that tomorrow's vote is a referendum on the war, a vote for the Democrats IMO accepts our defeat and is for bringing our troops home, while a Republican vote is in favor of continuing on with the objective of winning. Even on election eve, it seems apparent that the result will be very close and will NOT represent a resounding repudiation of the president's policies. It will more aptly reflect an electorate split down the middle on the Iraq issue.

The Democrats are too savvy to say outright that they want to give up on the war, but I think those voting Democrat, with Iraq in mind, fully expect that to be the agenda of the Democrats.

There are few if any nuances or in-betweens when it comes to win-lose. It is one or the other. I don't know whether we can win this war, but I am quite sure we can lose it decisively and quickly. All it will take for the latter is for us to start announcing timetables and withdrawing troops.

It is a terrible thing to send young men and women into war and harms way, and few would ever want that responsibility. Yet, the consequences of our losing this war could be catastrophic for civilized society.

It's ironic that our troops, the ones whose lives are most at risk, seem to see this with the greatest clarity.
