I've been mulling over the Kerry gaffe and the tardy non-apology apology ("you have to know that I didn't mean what I said and you are the embodiment of evil to criticize me")and the Haggard denials, followed by non-denials, and then partial admissions (essentially "the devil made me do it"), all of which came on the heels of the Foley revelations, admissions, resignation, and excuses(i.e, "not only am I a drunk" but "I'm a psychologically damaged drunk due to childhood sexual abuse." IOW "the devil did it to me?")

I guess no one is personally responsible anymore for his or her own actions. They're either misunderstood by evil forces,
compelled by evil forces, or done in by evil forces.

These musings lead me to a search for prior scandals of the
salacious variety, which I am pleased to share:

Ah, for the good old days! Ya gotta love some of these miscreants of the past.

Mel Reynolds wouldn't even admit he was wrong at the time of sentencing. He likened his pending imprisonment to the treatment accorded his slave ancestors.

Barney Frank took the high road in drawing the line at paid sex in his townhouse on the part of his then paramour.

Clinton's sexual peccadillos were nothing more than private affairs between he and his wife.

Gary Hart effectively told the media to "bring it on" but paid the price when denials could not overcome pictorial proof.

Bob Packward tried to hold on but was run from office and faced the criminal justice system on other matters for some time thereafter.

Gingrich's affairs were publicized and were in stark contrast to his public position on family values.

And on, and on and on.

The list of links even includes some older historical perspectives.

My conclusion is that "evil" is not the culprit here.
It's arrogance.
The arrogance born of too much power and too many people willing to be apologists for the arrogant.

Just my two centavos.

P.S. I forgot to mention that second link above. It's for
a new kind of lie detector. I'd sure love to have one of those when I'm deposing the adverse party...lol
