The September 1997 issue of Computer Design has an article on chips for DVD drives. From page 50 of the article:
"Companies selling single chip MPEG2 decoders include C-Cube, Hitachi, Hyundai Digital Media (HDM), IBM Microelectronics, LSI Logic, Odeum, SGS-Thomson, and Zoran."
Hitachi??
Also, the article should have read: "Companies announcing single chip MPEG2 decoders include . . ."
Also from the article:
"Two other companies -- Philips (with the Trimedia Chip) and Chromatic (Mpact chip) -- offer an even higher level of integration by providing other multimedia features (such as 3-D graphics) in addition to MPEG-2 and AC-3 decoding. Some industry observers, however, question the Trimedia and Mpact strategy, because it increases the cost of the chips while removing the flexibility provided by separate 3-D graphics chips. If computer manufacturers commit to using the highly integrated multimedia chips, they will be unable to upgrade system designs as higher-performance 3-D graphics chips continue to emerge." |
