Subdued Saddam urges reconciliation
Two days after being sentenced to death by hanging, Saddam Hussein has appeared in court again. Unusually subdued, in stark contrast to his defiance when given the death penalty on Sunday, the ousted president urged Iraqis to seek reconciliation. Invoking the Prophet Mohammad and Jesus, Saddam said: "I call on all Iraqis, Arabs and Kurds, to forgive, reconcile and shake hands."
At the weekend, Saddam was ordered to hang over the killing of 148 people in the mainly Shi'ite town of Dujail after an assassination attempt in 1982. In this, a separate trial, he and six former commanders face charges of genocide for their roles in the 1988 Anfal military campaign against ethnic Kurds. Prosecutors say up to 180,000 Kurds were killed, many of them by gas attacks.
