Barry, Re: AMD and computer shows

IMHO you need to be careful in interpreting what you see at computer shows. My very first personal computer was an Atari ST. I went to a few computer shows where the Atari Faithful congregated. Business was always brisk, and prices and enthusiasm were high. The main reason for this was that Atari users lacked the opportunities that IBM-compatible users had to buy stuff in any mall and to talk with other users and to vendors on any bulletin board. Many times I heard how Atari was so obviously superior and would be taking over the PC world. The resemblance to some of the more extreme posts on the AMD thread is eerily similar to me. :-)

Another thing: prices for AMD chips could be high because demand is healthy or they could be high because supply is restricted. It has been reported that some chip retailers are "out of stock" of faster K6 chips, which encourages the AMD faithful. But, again, this might just as easily be a supply problem.

As for Intel needing to "BECOME paranoid" I looked briefly at the new book on Intel by Tim Jackson, "Inside Intel". I think they are more than sufficiently paranoid. (Meaning that, of course, in a *good* way for stockholders.)
