Versailles had no sewer system. People used chamber pots, which were dumped into the courtyards at night. If you had to go outside the palace at night, you rented a heavy leather umbrella to try to protect yourself.

This was the same system used in London and Paris and most of the cities at the time. The waste was dumped into the back alleys at night, accompanied by the cry, "Gardy Loo!" which is a corruption of the French "Gardez L'Eau!" or, Watch out for the Water.

The stench must have been overwhelming.
