Of course, the population is larger. As a percentage of population, though, there are fewer. Here, argue with the communists in the Census Bureau.

Note that the percentage of poor drops from about 22% in the early 1960s to about 11% in the early 1970s. It went up some and then down a little from the peak during Reagan. Granted, it is on the rise again...
