Japanese, U.S., European firms agree on DVD-R format

Ten Japanese, U.S. and European firms on Friday reached a final agreement on a write-once DVD-R format following a basic accord in April, officals at the companies said Friday. The firms, including Pioneer Electronic Corp., are expected to start developing discs and drives as early as next month.

Parties to the agreement include Toshiba Corp., Sony Corp. and Hitachi Ltd..

The discs will have a storage capacity of 3.95 gigabytes - sufficient to record about one and a half hours of video.

DVD-R discs are expected to be widely used in video and DVD-ROM trial production. DVD-Rs with a capacity of 4.7 gigabytes, the same as DVD-ROMs, will likely be developed by autumn next year, industry watchers say.
