>>>If I were the party, I'd say that is grounds for stripping him of all his party seniority and privileges.<<<

If the Democrats had 60 Senators in the next Senate, they might consider punishing Senator Lieberman. However, they will not have a majority without the two independents sitting with them. Besides, the Senator has held significant leadership positions for the Democrats in the Senate. He is one of them.

>>>Why do you say Liberman is the most powerful Democrat in the Senate? What is the source of his power?<<<

If Senator Lieberman wants to cross the aisle, he will give the Republicans the majority in the Senate for the next Congress. That is ultimate power in Congress.

>>>But on the principle of it, . . . ."

The late Senator Wellstone once told a story about his first year in the Senate. At first, he didn't want to deal with Senator Helms because of his principles. However, after some time, he realized that if he wanted to fulfill his agenda he would have to work with Senator Helms. He did that and they became friends. I guess Senator Wellstone was a horse-trader "in that old boy club we call the Senate."
