I am inclined to agree that the really devious stuff comes from the circle around Bush. He agrees with the broad principles and the necessity in "wartime" (if you believe in a war that never ends and can never be won or lost). The history books will strip back the covers and let us know who was doing what when. My most recent experience living in Europe (2002-2004 in Amsterdam) reminded me how much Europeans appreciate the difference between politics and people. While Bush is not welcome by many, I always felt a sense of hospitality wherever I went.
