** OT ** I've never seen the Pilot for Crime Story, but it reminds me of a TV pilot I once saw done by Orson Welles in the mid-50's.

Stunning stuff, kind of a grainy Naked City (the movie) slash Citizen Kane slash urban expression kind of thing. The networks passed, saying it was "too sophisticated", and we ended up with the Beverly Hillbillies.

Looking at Woody Allen's introspective phase, you can see he probably ripped off a lot of ideas from that pilot by old Orson.

Saddest thing I heard in the past few years was a tape on CBC radio of Orson in his declining years. He had been paid to provide voice over for a cat food commercial, and he got into an argument with the director over the proper "approach" to the voice.

Welles eventually starts saying how he's done Othello on stage and all that, and to his credit, the director humors him. But you can also hear what the director is trying to get across.

"It's f*cking CAT FOOD, you moron."

That wonderful voice saying the most idiotic things.
