Mortgage lending giant Countrywide Financial Corp. (CFC) Thursday said its total mortgage-loan fundings were $41 billion in October, up 9% from September but off 12% from year-ago levels.

"Purchase activity has started to slow. However, following the drop in interest rates during the month of September, October refinance activity increased to $24 billion - the highest dollar volume since October 2005," CEO Anthony Mozilo said in a press release detailing the monthly data.
