...pound foolish. :)

Well, in all the recrimination to come, we can say one good thing about Rummy. He accomplished more change in modernizing our armed forces than any previous SecDef. He shook up the Pentagon, reorganized a stodgy armed forces to make them more useful in the modern world where we need rapid reaction special forces. So he did some good.

Truth is that I like the idea of having an armed forces that is focused on taking care of problems quickly and then getting back out. Our goal should never be to occupy. Let's let the world know that our days of nation building are over. That is a job for the UN. That if we are attacked again, the world will understand that our days from nation destruction are far from over, but that we won't bear the brunt of nation rebuilding like we did in Iraq.

That may be harsh, but just because we've had a good result in the polls, I don't want anyone to start thinking that this war with the Islamic fanatics is over. It's far from over. So we'd better still be prepared to retaliate against and topple nations that support terror. If that threat is implicit, then we have more leverage in diplomacy. The folks in the Middle East really only understand one thing and that is military might and results. When they sense weakness or dissension in the ranks of their enemies, then they take advantage of that, as we've seen with Iran and North Korea.

Anyway, with Democrats back in charge, I'm hoping we're back to the old saw: "Walk softly but carry a big stick." Let's just not forget that in order to effectively walk softly, you need the biggest stick in town.
