Ichy,

That's a real concern - but running from police is an issue everywhere - not just on the water.

The more likely scenarios is US kids dying because of idiotic 911 practices in Ontario.

Real scenario on Georgian Bay - my son and his girlfriend head out for dinner on the boat and have a break down on the way back (40 km run). We are in cell phone range the whole way so no big deal right?

Idiot OPP officer refuses to refer this to the Coast Guard and my kid is stuck in the middle of the Bay (yes I know its not life and death, but I can't go get him from North Carolina). Can I call the Canadian Coast Guard or a 911 service from the US - as I found out no - the 800 service is blocked from outside of Canada. I call the US Coast Guard and get escalated to a national emergency response team and they have to escalate to Ottawa - where we get on a conference call (really) and they agree that they are required to dispatch a boat and will discuss procedures with the OPP. Someone in their North Bay dispatch center gets spanked - but this took almost 8 hours.

BTW - I was advised to keep my boats registered here in the US - because on any long run in the Bay I am more likely to get assisted by US than Canadian Coast Guard (despite having my cottage 2 miles from a Canadian Coast Guard base).
