My take about Rumsfeld resignation coming on the heels of the election rout was because of the criticisms from neocons like Richard Perle etc. I could agree, that the decision was accelerated by the election rout.

Someone, either on this thread or elsewhere on Si had suggested that Bush could have appointed Lieberman. since BUsh does not have a Democrat in his cabinet, I would say that could have tried to bring John Murtha on board and the Defence Secretary. It may be far-fetched idea, but for a office so powerful as the President of the US, he/she could have extended a olive branch as such and gotten away with it, even if that angered his base.

After all, he is a lame-duck and I would think he would be working towards a legacy in his final years instead of doing things to please his base.

I would also hope he would restrain his base from attacks bordering on hate against Nancy Pelosi and that Nancy would reciprocate likewise.

The final two years will be something I would watch with interest. The decision on Bolton is already encouraging for a start.
