I go with the assumption that the Islamist movement is a very serious one... that it is the current incarnation of an aggressive, imperialistic aspect of Islam. I think that this evolving conflict will outlast all of us. They dragged us into a religious war during a time in our history when most Westerners can't even understand the very notion of fighting a religious war.

The way I see it, it would be totally irrational to expect that it would all get resolved in the course of a couple of quick campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq. Or, for that matter, during the two terms of one President - or, during a period while the same party controls both houses. This war will be a long process, and all sides are still destined to win - and to lose - many battles.

In the long run - or, shall we say, in order for us to have a "long run" -- frankly, I think that being able to control nuclear proliferation is more important than what the political map of Iraq will look like 5 or 10 years from now.
