The degree of influence that Iran has over Iraqi Shiites is very unclear. Sure they share the same flavour of Islam, but the Iraqis are Arabs and the Iranians are not. And there is that little matter of a recent war between the two countries.

I was against the invasion, of course, and was saying two years ago that the best strategy for the US was to just leave. That still looks like the best thing to do, but it is only the best of a set of very bad options. All bets are off for the future of Iraq.
