Bear,

I have property in Canada and my kids are dual citizens. We go for extended stays and I don't think this is a big deal.

Try bring fire arms into Canada or - God forbid - something you are going to leave there without paying GST.

If they minded their borders to other countries with the rigor they apply to collecting GST - we could probably have open borders :-)

I was stopped for an hour one time - taking a boat I bought in Canada back there. It was only an hour because I had the paperwork to prove I had paid my GST :-)

On the US side - I stopped and asked if I needed to do any paperwork on importing the boat - the guy laughed and said - we have 'Free Trade'.

In another incident - when I was living in Seattle my brother-in-law was visiting and I lent him my car to go tour around with. He took it on the ferry to Victoria and it was seized - his Ontario license coupled with a WA tag looked like a felony GST avoidance incident. It was a pain getting my car back.

John
