How did they manage that? People generally are pretty reluctant to part with the mineral rights if they have the choice.


I don't know. It was done at the turn of the 20th century........probably when there weren't that many people living in CA.

What if the new owner wanted to open a strip mine?

Nothing under the surface of the land accrues to the owner of the land. So that if copper was found under the land or oil....whoever holds the deed to the mineral rights gets the commodity. I was annoyed when I first learned about it. That's why I get so tired of the GOP lament that we are hurting corporations or the rich. Its such a joke.
