I believe you're right about Microsoft's strategy. They want to buy their way into this market, and I'm sure they see the hardware royalty arrangement as something that will help push Apple aside.

In the long run, it may not work for them. I think the record companies are likely to favor whichever arrangement nets them more money. Right now, iTunes is lining their pockets. Unless Zune really takes off, it won't create significant revenue for Universal or anyone else.
