. . . AND CHARLIE TURNS OFF THE CHARM

NEW YORK POST
Editorial
November 9, 2006

Well, that didn't take long.

Rep. Charles Rangel (D-Harlem) - incoming chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee - has been verbally sparring with Vice President Dick Cheney for more than a year.

Last week, the veteran Harlem pol responded to the veep's claim that he didn't understand how the economy works by calling Cheney a "son of a bitch."

Real classy.

Yesterday, in his first full press conference since the Democrats won on Tuesday, Rangel ratcheted things up.

He noted that an office that Cheney uses in the U.S. Capitol building has traditionally been used by the Ways and Means chairman. Then he said, mockingly, "I'm trying to find some way to be gentle to restore the dignity of that office" - indicating that Cheney had better find new digs.

So, the same day that the president of the United States tries to extend an olive branch to the leaders of the incoming Democratic majority, Rangel slaps it away by slurring the vice president.

"The dignity of that office," indeed.

This is what voters were looking for in giving the Democrats the House?

Rangel has long pined for the committee chairmanship he's in line to assume come January. And why not - it's one of the most powerful offices in America.

But it's also a position that requires more than simple longevity if an incumbent is to be successful - qualities like tact, dignity and grace.

Qualities that were sorely lacking in Rep. Rangel yesterday.

For shame, Charlie.

For shame.
