To Both Jim & Jerry - When doing your exercise on the cost for a small business network system could you also breakout the costs to the client for the "value added" (ie. consulting, system configuration) services. IMO this will point out two specific items (1) the potential revenues for the VAR and (2) additional revenues to Novell if they set up a direct value added "system" consulting service division (think of it as "build to order" network system).

Now, assume that the new Novell consulting division does not limit their product line just to Novell products but any networking software or even hardware. Imagine the potential for the "new" revenue streams if Novell partners with their 'best' VAR's in providing such a one stop shopping service. What does Novell offer....Their 55 million installed base, a certification that the Novell solution meets or exceeds current standards (ie. year 200 requirements) and the global buying power to purchase all necessary hardware and software application from any vendor at the best price. Novell could even offer client financing like GM, Ford or Chrysler does with fleet automobile purchases.

Remember, the point of this exercise is to (1) see if Novell is competitive with their product line of network software applications and (2) to determine where additional Novell revenues will grow in the future. It is the latter that I am most focused on. Novell needs stable, predictable and new sorces of revenue streams which they can develop and grow for the future.

Any ideas Jerry?..... What about you Jim?

EKS

P.S. Did you know that Ford made more profit from their finance division than their car division last year.

P.S.S. IBM has grown their service division by over 30% over the last two years. These companies do change with the times as the market dictates. Who would think that Compaq or IBM will build to order PC's five years ago....now it is the business model to copy (thanks to Dell).
