Then: boom, Iraq is story 1, and Afghanistan festers and rots.

Iraq didn't have an enormous impact on what we were doing in Afghanistan.

People look at that and think that the US is one of two things: liars or incompetent.

Neither, or both if you count any level of dishonesty or incompetence, neither to an unusual degree, both to a fairly normal degree.

And don't get me started on the 'Coalition of the Willing'. Outside of Britain, there has been no significant contribution by other nations.

Which is not an effective argument that the action was unilateral. "Outside of Britain" - Well Britain is indeed there. "no significant contribution" - That doesn't equal "no contribution".

Contrast that to the vast coalition that Bush 41 put together.

We had more limited aims in that case, and it was in the immediate aftermath of Saddam's invasion of Kuwait. Such a coalition is nice to have, but not necessarily a decisive factor. If we didn't get a good sized coalition, it wouldn't have changed our actions much, or the result of the actions.
