<The idea and the person should be made part of QCOM.> Parakey does look great.
Unfortunately, QCOM's record of success in non-CDMA ventures is poor. I shudder at the thought of "Strategic Investments".
I am hoping that Iridigm is great. NetZero, Wingcast, Wireless Knowledge, Leap Wireless, Vesper, Pegaso, Globalstar, Eudora, 724 Solutions, SnapTrack [$1 bn], Graviton, Techfaith have all failed to make QCOM a brass razzoo or to do much of anything to get CDMA moving or enhance the bottom line. I have forgotten others. I am hoping Flarion is worth nearly $1 bn.
I don't think the father's talents are necessarily passed on to the sons. <QUALCOMM Ventures will be managed by Jeff Jacobs, senior vice president of business development for QUALCOMM. In his current role, Jacobs is responsible for QUALCOMM's investments, strategic partnerships and new business opportunities. Previously, Jacobs helped guide QUALCOMM's Internet efforts after founding and managing QUALCOMM's Eudora Products. He also helped grow the Company's OmniTRACS business (QUALCOMM Wireless Business Solutions) to be the industry's leading provider of wireless data solutions. Most recently, Jacobs has led the Company's 1xEV (HDR) activities. An advisory committee, comprised of senior executives from QUALCOMM with extensive technical expertise, industry knowledge and corporate relationships, will guide the investment strategy and participate in venture development activities.
"The convergence of wireless technology and the Internet has created opportunities for new products, applications and services, and we look forward to helping drive these innovations," said Jeff Jacobs. "QUALCOMM Ventures will focus on strategic investments in promising, young startup companies that can deliver these new capabilities and accelerate CDMA usage worldwide." >
Maybe the committee wasn't very comfortable telling Jeff that the ideas he put to them were dopey. I thought and ranted years ago [maybe centuries ago] that Eudora should have become like Parakey = the access to cyberspace. But Eudora never amounted to much and was ever only tinkered with, here and there.
I actually can't think of a successful strategic investment that has been made. One could conclude something from that, to do with Jeff's employment.
I have just thought of PayPal, which I think QCOM put money into. And, Googling, I am reminded of Obopay, which should turn out to be the biggest thing in human history obopay.com At first, that might seem an overstatement, but money is the measure of human value [there are others, but money is a super-powerful driver and measuring stick]. Human value is what humans are about. And Obopay runs on BREW.
