Yes, it's possible that lithium ion will become obsolete quickly. As the appliance size becomes smaller, the batteries become a greater percentage of the package and to waste any space and weight to cylindrical metal cans must be unthinkable to the design engineers. Also, the rechargability of these devices is quite high and the appliances start to get obsolete before the battery wears out. Also owners of laptops may get tired of recharging them so often and start using them as plug ins before the batteries wear out. All these factors may make a retail replacement business anemic.
