Its possible that without Iraq there might have been a few thousand more Americans deployed in to Afghanistan, but its far from certain. At most it would have been a marginal difference.

I think a coalition is necessary, not just from a logistical point of view, but from a legitimacy viewpoint.

The logistics are often complicated by a large coalition. Although obviously you need some place to base the attack from. As for "legitimacy" I've never seen a convincing argument about how getting 2 or 20 or 100 more countries to join in makes the operation more legitimate.
