Holyfield wins unanimous decision over Oquendo
New York, NY (Sports Network) - Evander Holyfield continued his comeback toward a fifth heavyweight title with a 12-round unanimous decision over Fres Oquendo at the Alamodome.

Two judges scored the fight 114-113, while another had it 116-111. However, despite being knocked down in the opening round, Oquendo seemed the busier fighter in the latter rounds. When the decision was announced, a disgusted Oquendo walked out of the ring and to the locker room.

The 44-year-old Holyfield wasn't spectacular and at times looked sluggish, but he drew the favor of the judges to capture the lightly-regarded vacant USBA heavyweight title and improve to 40-8-2 with 26 knockouts.

Holyfield floored his opponent with his first punch of the bout, an overhand right that caught Oquendo on the side of the head nearly 30 seconds into the fight. Holyfield then landed a right to knock Oquendo against the ropes.

After the fight, Holyfield said he didn't want to end the bout quick in the first round.

"I wanted to box," Holyfield said. "The most important thing is to trust my knowledge. I went 12 rounds. Some people didn't think I could go 12 rounds."

Holyfield also said he hopes to get a championship chance again in the first quarter of 2007.
