It is amazing what is possible today. When I started in business I accidentally landed in a very advanced bed (a Swiss bank) where advanced technology was the mantra. They were planning to integrate their network of worldwide systems including online transaction processing in the early 70s. The system went live in 1976.

This exposure made me aware very early on that we would communicate worldwide soon even as end users or at the very least across businesses. I remember the puzzled looks on peoples faces when I designed an accounting/billing system in the late 80s to be a non-stop 24/7 system. With very few exceptions, there was no comprehension that we would enter a period where business would run around the clock, worldwide. The days of the "batch window" were numbered.

Today, anybody with a website doing e-commerce knows... and my system is still on the market.
