I know this comes from a Canadian newspaper and may not be as erudite as the Post or the NYTs but it might inform a wee bit.

Guantanamo: On guard for America

Peter Worthington goes behind bars for a look at infamous detention facility

By PETER WORTHINGTON

GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba -- As far as the outside world is concerned, the big question concerning the Guantanamo Bay detention facility for al-Qaida and Taliban "enemy combatants," is whether or not they are being tortured for information.

The likes of Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and various lawyers for detainees have publicized allegations of torture and inhumanity that U.S. government and authorities at Guantanamo routinely deny and dismiss as disinformation.

While I can't speak about what went on in the past, after visiting Guantanamo, I have no hesitation in affirming that nothing resembling torture or cruel or inhumane treatment is going on -- unless it's actions by some of the detainees. In fact, I'd argue the Americans are being ridiculously considerate, if not soft; their "humane" policy invites the contempt of their wards, more than it does appreciation or respect.

I went to Gitmo with a group of select individuals that included former Attorney General Ed Meese (under U.S. president Ronald Reagan) and that nice David Frum (a former speechwriter for President George W. Bush), and had on-record briefings from senior staff and toured the facility -- something like six separated camps, all grim, but nothing smacking of mistreatment or harassment.
