Thought provocking Cut & Paste from the SI Frank Coluccio New Tech MB

Video vs Voice:
Let’s consider a simplified situation:
A POTS telephone uses 64 kbps. Suppose video requires 25 mbps. That’s the minimum requirement put on the FIRST MILE.

So we need a bandwidth increase of 400 times. Since people generally stay watching TV longer than making telephone calls, we have to multiply by 2.5, which makes it 1000.

So in order to accommodate the bandwidth requirement, we also need a 1000 time increase on the “second mile” and the backbone if all voice becomes video.

Compared with 15 years ago, are our “second mile” and backbone up to the requirement?

Believe MRVC has some interesting/exciting 2nd mile products including the OS9000.
