The hippie message was close to Jesus Christ's in many ways, as is the ideal of communalistic living, which simply means helping your neighbor and obeying the golden rule. As for the drugs, they were used at first in order to explore the spiritual inner world, not as hedonism. In fact, one of the first experiments (outside the CIA's MK ULTRA program) with psychedelics was done at Marsh Chapel in Boston where divinity students who took magic mushrooms claimed to "see God". It is also common for ancient religions around the world to use psychdelic herbs as sacraments. Some still use them. The reason McCarthy could get away with persecuting liberals in the early 50's using the word "communism" is because after the elitist Robber Baron industrial upper class caused the Great Depression, it made radicals out of the workingclass. They had to band together and get help from the government just to survive. In those days "communism" was a name they gave to a workingclass movement to band together against the greedy upperclass in order to survive. It included worker's rights, minimum wages, civil rights, etc. Johnny Cash credits the communal New Deal farm combine he grew up on with saving his family. Twenty acres and a mule, baby. It worked. The Russian revolution quickly got corrupted and by 1950 they had turned all the ideals of "communism" upside down and formed what was an oppressive military dictatorship, closer to fascism than the ideal of communism. So the word communism became a very dirty word in the US. Ironically though, the original ideal of communism is close to the ideal of Christianity. And hippie communes had much the same ethos. Amazing but true. It gets down to this, is this land "our land" and is our government "for the people by the people" or should it all be controlled by elitist upper classes and their trickle down economics. Bush rewarded the rich for being rich and it worked for the top 10% but it has not benefited anyone else. On the contrary. Only 10% of the country have benefitted from Bush's tax cuts or from the gifts to nthe investment class. Only about 2% benefit from his estate tax repeal idaas. And the richer you are the more you benefit.
