While Sirius is satellite-based and uses radio signals to communicate to people on the ground, I can't see many parallels.

There aren't.

Mq, I have the Sirius service in my car. As a result of a minor glitch with my radio, I learned that there is no direct link between a satellite and the user. Instead, Sirius uses land-based repeaters whose range is naturally limited. Like you, I was under the impression that there was a direct satellite-user link.
