I went to Il Fornaio this weekend in Beverly Hills. At 8:30 on Friday night there was no wait for outside seating or 30 minutes for inside for a party of two. The food was great and the bread was excellent, but the service was poor. We saw our waitress three times the entire night. Of the entrees we ordered, I preferred the shell pasta with chicken, brocolli, and sun dried tomatoes.

As far as what I think of it as an investment, it seemed like the turnover rate is slow, and many of the menu items are affordable. The decor is almost the exact opposite of CAKE, with wide open ceilings and bright light. They are opening a 3rd street location in Santa Monica in October which should do well, but I think I prefer Trilussa, another Italian restaurant on 3rd street. While not as impressive as a CAKE or RAIN, I think they could still make their own niche in the Italian food market. I'll talk more about this when I get a chance.
