"The envirnmentalists are not interested in environmetnally sound mining. They want no mining at all!"

Yes! very true in Montana also! The Montana Environmental Dis-Information Center (MEIC) was able to get a judge to rule that the MT Dept. of Environmental Quality (DEQ) had to re-do an Envir. Impact study for the Placer dome Golden sunlight operation. I attended one of the public meetings. There is an open-pit. MEIC wanted the pit filled in with waste rock. Ind. scientists and DEQ said if pit was filled in, finely disseminated sulphides in the broken rock would generate acid when exposed to oxygen and water. Water would escape into the rock fractures in the wall rock and escape into the environment. DEQ said leave pit open, collect water from the undg. ramp system, treat it with lime to neutralize and then release water.

Cost of backfilling would make the 250 acres the most expensive real estate in MT. But MEIC are still pushing for the most expensive alternative and the worst solution from an environmental protection POV. The objective is to make mining uneconomic in this State. Rise in price of metals has set em back for a spell!
