U.S. Department of Defense's JITC Conducts IPv6 Testing Over Global Crossing's IP Network

Tuesday November 14, 7:58 am ET

FLORHAM PARK, N.J., Nov. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Global Crossing (Nasdaq: GLBC - News), a leading global IP solutions provider, today announced that the Joint Interoperability Test Command (JITC) is using the Global Crossing IP network to test the global capabilities of Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6). JITC supports the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) by providing testing, evaluation and certification of information systems and equipment.

Global Crossing's IPv6 team is working with the JITC at its center in Ft. Huachuca, AZ, to certify and test equipment and capabilities before the DoD transitions from IPv4 to IPv6, the newest generation of Internet Protocol. The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has issued a memorandum requiring all federal civilian agencies to add IPv6 technology to their network backbones by June 2008.

Global Crossing has given the JITC access to and termination from its Phoenix Network Operations Center (NOC) to a nearby Point of Presence (PoP) to help JITC simulate a network environment that is similar to the DoD's existing network.

"JITC has expressed a real vote of confidence in Global Crossing, and we're eager to share with them our knowledge of IPv6 as they continue to test the newest generation of Internet Protocol," said Alan Rosenberg, Global Crossing's vice president, partnership development. "We have been pioneering the widespread adoption of IPv6 for the past five years. It's a natural extension of our work to collaborate with the JITC in this phase and the next, when government agencies begin to transition from IPv4 to IPv6."

IPv6 adds tremendous intelligence, flexibility and scalability to ubiquitous communications. IPv6 simplifies mobile IP networking with improved routing and security capabilities. By enabling devices to automatically configure their Internet connectivity, IPv6 will provide a more seamless and secure global connectivity and increase the ability of information exchange between diverse users. This streamlined connectivity will support the DoD's transition to global network centric operations and warfare by bringing the network directly to the warfighter.

Global Crossing has fully deployed IPv6 across its global IP network, and it's a standard service component of Global Crossing's global Internet Access Services and IP Virtual Private Network (IP VPN). Global Crossing continues to influence the development of Internet Protocol standards through its involvement in industry organizations, such as the American Council for Technology's Industry Advisory Council (ACT/IAC).

In June 2006, Global Crossing announced that it was among the companies awarded a contract by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) in the Southeast Sunbelt region. Under the contract, Global Crossing will provide a variety of telecommunications services to federal agencies based in the region. Global Crossing's portion of the contract, valued at $16.43 million, was awarded by GSA's Federal Technology Service in Atlanta.
