"viruses cause DNA changes. That can occur in one generation"

Many things can cause genetic change... and MOST mutations are HARMFUL (even fatal), or have no obvious effect.

A *small* fraction of a percent of mutations may provide some kind of survival benefit so... if the individual with the beneficial mutation survives and reproduces, and the mutation is inherited, and it provides some degree of improved survival chances --- then over a long period of time it could be expected to accumulate in the species gene pool until it became widely expressed throughout the entire species.

But... if the alteration *isn't* passed along to the next generation, (or if that next generation itself dies out before reproducing), then the mutation/genetic alteration has NO EFFECT upon the species evolution.
