Your idea that "all you need to do is hose down an MTBE spill and problem solved" is indicative of how defective your reasoning abilities are.

MTBE is water soluble and essentially non-biodegradable. Hosing it down puts it into the water table, which is precisely the problem.

I can imagine you might be somewhat sensitive going through life continually being compared with a five year old. But the trait is so obvious, I can see why you've heard this so often.
