All drug research is based on underlying work done in the public sector. The drug companies step in when a specific area of research indicates that there is potential for an application of that public research.

There are, of course, exceptions, but alot of those are accidents. For example, minoxidil (Rogaine) was originally being tested as a blood pressure medication. Patients rubbed it on the back of their hands, and noticed that hair grew (at least this is the story I remember). The company saw a huge potential, and ran with it.

I don't see how you can morph this issue into an issue on abortion. But, I have noticed that there are those on the right try to morph every issue into either abortion or gun control. This issue is not abortion, but utilization of genetic material that could improve the quality of and save lives.
