< Get your brain in gear. Part of the "evolutionary process" is for people such as myself to speak out against brutes and savages. >

That's right... action, reaction... in order for their to be evil, you need someone to judge it evil and attack back.

< "Basic human nature" is not singular. It occupies a wide spectrum between brutality and harmony.>

Right, of course we are both part of the process... that's my point.

< You would simply stand there with a stupid poleaxed look in your eyes, and perhaps mutter: "Starving is basic human nature">

Well, I might stand there... but it wouldn't be because I'm perplexed. I would probably recognize what was happening (evolution, like what's going on in the ME, Islam, etc) and let it be, rather than get involved... unless it made sense at the time. I'd let the moths run to the flame and be moths... like GW Bush running into the ME, he's compelled to do so, it's fine. No reason getting all emotional about it... and you learn a lot by watching rather than doint. BUT, "perplexed" is incorrect, come voting time, or when an opportunity arises for me to take action that might be of use, then I do it.

The key is emotionality... if there is a lot of emotional energy behind it, it needs looking at rather than jumping in and doing right away. JMO
