Barons article uses opinion quotes from Asnd's #1 competitor Csco to make its points. If Baron was interested in finding the truth or objectively reporting the condition of Asnd's products, they would use independent objective sources. It is fair to ask the question: why has Barrons used Csco reps as their primary source? Would you consider this a reliable an objective effort to arrive at the truth?
IMO, the article is nothing but an attempt at negative hype against Asnd.

Don Listwin, who runs Cisco's Service Provider business, says the AS5300
has powerful processors that will allow customers to offer services like
low-priced faxing and voice mail over the Internet. This week, Cisco will
make that digital-modem technology available across its line of
Internet-access products.

Ascend missed a transition taking place in the Internet, claims Litwin.
Increasingly, the 'Net will be used by businesses as an extension of their
private voice and data networks, so they have high expectations of security
and reliability. Ascend approached the Internet business from a marketing
perspective rather than an engineering perspective, Litwin claims.
"We(Litwin-Csco)
encouraged people to expose Ascend's marketing campaign for what it was,"
he says, "which was about 10 times its real engineering position."

This article sounds more like an ad for Csco and Asnd shorts than a serious attempt at research journalism.
